RGDATA has Central Statistics Office figures for the last quarter of 2024 show a rise of 7% or 5,331 in the number of incidents of Theft & Related offences, with six out of every ten incidents in this increase due to theft from shops.
RGDATA Director General Tara Buckley said: “This increase in reported thefts from shops comes as no surprise to shop owners and their staff who deal with incidents on a daily basis. There are also thousands of daily incidents that go unreported due to frustration and lack of faith in the current system. RGDATA urges new Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan to take action on these shocking statistics as a matter of urgency and deliver on the promises to tackle retail crime set out in the programme for Government.”
